Benefits of Dental Implants
San Jose, CA

Smiling CoupleOver 3 million Americans have had dental implants, and the number is growing every day. In spite of advancements in dental care, millions of Americans lose their teeth due to dental cavities, periodontal disease, or trauma. In the past, people had only dentures and dental bridges to restore their missing teeth. Today, though, Nancy Shiba, DDS provides you with dental implants that are the best restorative options for your teeth.

How Do Dental Implants Work?

Dental implants are metal posts surgically placed into your jawbone where once your natural tooth resided. These implants act as replacement tooth roots and allow us to place crowns on top of them.
Since dental implants fuse to your jaw, they provide strength and stability to your jawbone.

Unlike dentures and traditional dental bridges, dental implants can withstand a lot of force and won’t become loose in your mouth. Dental implants are very comfortable since they feel just like your natural teeth.

Types of Dental Implants?

Two types of dental implants are commonly used:

Endosteal Implants

Endosteal implants are directly placed into the jawbone. The implants fused to the surrounding bone structure through a process called osseointegration. Once the gum and bone tissue heal, a post is attached to the implant that serves as a connection between the implants and the crown, bridge, or denture.

Subperiosteal Implants

Subperiosteal implants involve a metal frame that is fitted on top of the jawbone beneath the gums. It consists of metal posts that protrude out from the gums. As the gums heal, the implants get fixed to the jawbone. Crowns can then be mounted on to the posts.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants have many benefits:
•  Dental implants look and feel like your natural teeth. They are also extremely comfortable since they fuse to your bone, become permanent, and function like your real teeth.
•  Dental implants allow you to speak easily without any hindrances, unlike dentures that can slip while you are talking.
•  Slipping dentures and unstable dental bridges can make eating a chore. Dental implants can help you to chew even on hard and tough food without any discomfort.
•  Dental implants give you the most natural-looking smile out of all dental restorative options.
•  Dental implants do not require eroding down adjacent teeth, as is needed when you get a dental bridge. Since your natural teeth are not scaled down, dental implants help to preserve your long-term oral health.
•  Dental implants do not require messy adhesives to keep the restorations in place, unlike dentures.
•  Dental implants fuse to the jawbone preventing the alveolar bone from dissolving and maintaining the proper shape of your mouth.
•  With good oral hygiene and proper care, your dental implants can last a lifetime.

Candidates for Dental Implants

Most people who observe proper oral hygiene are good candidates for dental implants. Dental implants are most successful in people who have healthy gums and bone tissue and are committed to taking good care of their implants and their remaining natural teeth.
People who are not good candidates for dental implants are:
•  People typically under the age of 18, whose jawbone has not stopped growing.
•  Expecting mothers.
•  People who consume a lot of alcohol and heavy smokers.
•  People with systemic, chronic, or auto-immune diseases.
•  People who are undergoing cancer therapy.
•  People with hemophilia.
•  People who have recently undergone an organ transplant.
•  People who take immunity-suppressing drugs.
•  People who clench their teeth or suffer from bruxism.

Dental implants have a success rate of 98 percent. At Nancy Shiba, DDS, Dr. Shiba can evaluate if you are a good candidate for dental implants. Call us at (669) 306-7669 to schedule an appointment today!
